UNION STREET PARTY

YEAR

2021

TYPE OF PROJECT

Participatory moving image

Union Street Party has been held every year in September since its inception in 2009. The organisers wanted to do something for the communities that live and inhabit the street, to change the street’s character, and to bring some joy to the area.

During the early days of my research into the street, I realised I hadn’t done anything creative or practical for some time. My artistic practice began with a 35mm Pentax K1000, so I returned to that.

I approached people with a long-standing involvement with the party including organisers, performers and regular visitors. I asked them to tell me a story that recounts their favourite memory of the party. We then went out together and they shot an entire roll of 35mm black and white film in the location on the street where their story took place.

Each frame of these vignettes is a single 35mm frame, all frames are included, and they linger for as long as the story took to tell.
